Georgetown City Council Votes Out Airport Advisory Board

Georgetown FBO and Tower

Tuesday evening, Feb 12th, the Georgetown city council voted to eliminate the airport advisory board for the Georgetown airport (KGTU). The meeting was well attended by airport-interested parties including TXAA, AOPA, EAA and NBAA. TXAA wishes to thank their many members and other interested individuals who attended this important meeting.

The effect of this change is yet unknown on the operation of the airport. Sources at TxDOT Aviation Division say they generally strongly recommend that airport sponsors use airport advisors boards to help direct the future of the airport but also notes that such advisory boards must have clear guidelines and function in an advisory manner – leaving the final decision to the sponsor – city or county.

Equally important is the orderly and thoughtful input of the airport users. An organization such as “friends of the airport” can be critical to ensure the sponsor understands the needs of the airport users and the positive effect an airport has on the economic well-being of the whole community the airport supports.

The Georgetown airport has in the last year accepted just over $1 million dollars in federal grant money to improve the airport. Georgetown is obligated by contract for 20 years to comply with grant assurances that keep the airport operating in a fair and equitable manner. TXAA will monitor the city’s actions and work to ensure the airport continues to be one of the aviation centers for the central Texas region.

As we can see, we must be diligent and mindful of every aspect General Aviation in our state. The privilege of flying is slowly being eroded away. TXAA urges every pilot and aviation enthusiast to become pro-active with the operations at your airport. Create grass-root groups to support the progress and guidance of all airports in Texas. Joining TXAA is a good start.
